A Step-by-Step Overview of How ARAMCO Standards Are Applied During Project Execution

Every oil and gas project under Saudi Aramco follows one golden rule — nothing moves without complying with ARAMCO Engineering Standards (SAES). These standards are not just guidelines; they are a complete framework that defines how a project should be designed, constructed, tested, and handed over. Understanding how these standards are applied in each stage is what separates trained professionals from the rest.

It all starts with the design phase, where engineers prepare layouts, drawings, and specifications that strictly follow SAES requirements. For civil works, this includes foundation design, structural loading, and concrete mix criteria. Mechanical engineers plan piping routes, welding procedures, and pressure testing methods, while electrical engineers ensure proper grounding, cable sizing, and equipment protection based on SAES electrical codes.

Once the design is approved, the procurement and construction phase begins. Here, every material, from steel reinforcement to valves and cables, must be approved as per ARAMCO’s vendor list and material specifications. On site, construction follows approved inspection and test plans (ITPs) — covering excavation, concrete pouring, welding, coating, and installation. Each activity is inspected and documented according to SAES procedures.

Next comes testing and commissioning, where engineers perform hydrotesting, insulation resistance checks, calibration, and pre-commissioning verifications to ensure everything meets performance and safety requirements. Only after all SAES checklists are cleared can the system be energized or commissioned.
