Common Mistakes Engineers Make When Working Under ARAMCO Standards — And How to Avoid Them

Working on Saudi Aramco projects is every engineer’s dream — but it also comes with one of the toughest quality and compliance systems in the world. The ARAMCO Engineering Standards (SAES) leave no room for shortcuts, and even experienced engineers can make costly mistakes if they don’t fully understand the procedures. Let’s look at some common errors professionals make — and how to avoid them.

One of the biggest mistakes is starting work without reviewing the latest approved standards and project specifications. SAES documents are regularly updated, and using outdated versions can lead to rework or rejection during inspection. Every engineer must confirm that the design, materials, and methods align with the latest issue of SAES and the project-specific requirements.

Another common error is improper documentation and inspection record-keeping. Many engineers focus on completing site work but neglect test reports, checklists, and inspection logs. Under ARAMCO, every activity — from excavation to welding — must have proper evidence of inspection, testing, and approval before proceeding to the next stage.

Engineers also often overlook vendor and material approvals. Using non-approved suppliers or materials that do not meet SAES specifications can cause serious project delays and quality issues. Always verify vendor compliance through ARAMCO’s approved manufacturer lists before procurement.

Lastly, poor communication with QA/QC and inspection teams leads to unnecessary NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports). Regular coordination and pre-inspection meetings help ensure everyone is aligned with project standards.
