Formwork & Shuttering Essentials: On-Site Tips and Tolerances for Consistent Results

Getting your formwork right is the secret to crisp concrete finishes and on-schedule pours. Here are some on-site tips to help you set, check, and strip shuttering with confidence—every time.

1. Nail Your Alignment and PlumbUse spirit levels and plumb bobs to ensure panels are vertical within ±3 mm over 2 m. Misalignment leads to uneven surfaces and costly rework. Take a moment to shim and brace until each panel stands perfectly plumb before you pour.

2. Seal Panel Joints to Prevent LeaksEven small gaps can let cement slurry escape, causing honeycombing. Install thin plywood strips or foam gaskets at joints, and apply a light coat of release agent. Check for any daylight peeking through before you start placing concrete.

3. Respect Dimensional TolerancesFor architectural elements—exposed columns or beams—maintain formwork dimensions within ±5 mm of design. Mark your critical dimensions on the panels, and measure immediately after stripping so you can catch shifts before the next pour.

4. Prioritize Panel Cleanliness & ReleaseConcrete clings to residue and spalls wood surfaces. After each strip, clean panels of any grit or old oil, then reapply a thin, even film of formwork release agent. Fresh, clean panels give you crisp edges and reduce sticking problems.

5. Brace for Load & DeflectionA heavy concrete head can bend unsupported panels. Design bracing so deflection stays under L/360 of span. That means a 2 m panel should deflect no more than about 6 mm. Check bracing before each pour and adjust as needed.

6. Plan Your Striking SequenceStrip forms only after concrete reaches the required strength—often three to seven days, depending on mix and weather. Follow the recommended order: soffits first, then sides, to avoid sudden load shifts that crack your elements.
