How to Prepare Accurate BOQs and Abstracts for PWD Uttar Pradesh Works

In any PWD Uttar Pradesh project—whether a school building, hospital, or campus road—the Bill of Quantities (BOQ) and Abstract of Cost form the financial backbone of the work. For civil engineers and quantity surveyors, getting these right is essential for smooth tendering, execution, and billing.

The BOQ is a detailed list of work items with quantities, units, and rates as per UPPWD Schedule of Rates (SOR). The Abstract of Cost is a summarised version that shows the total cost for each head of work, including contingencies and overheads. Both documents must be internally consistent and match the site scope exactly.

Here’s the process to prepare them correctly:

1. Break Down the Scope of WorkSeparate work into clear heads—earthwork, RCC, masonry, finishes, services, roadwork—so the BOQ is organised.

2. Select the Correct SOR ItemsPick exact item codes and descriptions from the UPPWD SOR, ensuring the specifications match the design.

3. Calculate Quantities AccuratelyFollow IS 1200 measurement rules, apply deductions for openings, and include wastage where applicable.

4. Apply Rates and Structure the BOQMultiply quantities by the SOR rates and arrange the BOQ trade-wise for clarity.

5. Prepare the Abstract of CostSummarise each head’s total cost, adding contingencies, work-charged establishment, and applicable taxes.

6. Double-Check ConsistencyEnsure BOQ totals match the abstract, and all items in the abstract appear in the BOQ.
