How to Prepare BOQs and Abstracts for Maharashtra PWD Projects the Right Way

In Maharashtra PWD projects, whether you’re estimating for a building, a road, or a bridge, the Bill of Quantities (BOQ) and Abstract of Cost are the backbone of your submission. For civil engineers and quantity surveyors, getting these documents right is crucial for smooth approvals and trouble-free execution.

The BOQ is a detailed list of all work items with their quantities, units, and rates. It follows the Maharashtra PWD Schedule of Rates (SOR) and must be arranged in a logical, trade-wise sequence—earthwork, concrete, masonry, finishes, services, etc. The Abstract of Cost summarises these items into major heads and includes contingencies, work-charged establishment, and applicable taxes.

Here’s the right approach:

1. Understand the Scope – Break down the project into clear work components so no item is missed.

2. Select Accurate SOR Items – Ensure the item code, description, and unit in the BOQ exactly match the Maharashtra PWD SOR.

3. Calculate Quantities Properly – Follow IS 1200 and PWD measurement rules. Apply deductions for openings and consider wastage allowances where relevant.

4. Apply Rates Correctly – Multiply each quantity by the correct SOR rate. For non-schedule items, prepare a proper rate analysis.

5. Compile the Abstract of Cost – Group totals under major heads and add provisions like contingencies and statutory charges.

6. Cross-Check for Consistency – The BOQ totals must match the abstract, and both must align with the measurement sheets.

At Bhadanis PWD Online Training Institute, our Estimation and Costing Course – Based on Maharashtra PWD SOR teaches you how to prepare BOQs and abstracts exactly as per departmental norms, using real project examples and official formats.
