The Role of Civil and Electrical Engineers in 765 kV Substation Construction Projects

Behind every powerful 765 kV substation stands a team of dedicated civil and electrical engineers who make it all possible. These massive projects are not just about power transmission — they’re about precision, coordination, and engineering excellence at every stage.

Let’s start with the civil engineers. Their work begins long before any electrical equipment arrives on-site. They are responsible for site grading, soil testing, and foundation design for transformers, circuit breakers, and gantry structures. Every cubic meter of concrete poured and every reinforcement bar placed must meet strict specifications because the substation structures carry enormous loads and must remain stable for decades. Civil engineers also handle the construction of control buildings, cable trenches, drainage systems, fencing, and internal roads — ensuring the entire site is functional and safe even under harsh Saudi conditions like extreme heat and sandstorms.

Next come the electrical engineers, who bring the substation to life. They design and execute the installation of busbars, isolators, current transformers, voltage transformers, circuit breakers, and protection systems. They ensure all components are aligned, connected, and tested for insulation resistance, continuity, and protection logic. Electrical engineers also supervise cable laying, earthing networks, and lightning protection systems, which are vital for the safety and reliability of high-voltage operations.

In short, civil engineers build the foundation and structure, while electrical engineers create the energy flow — both working hand-in-hand to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient substations.
